Florence is a town located in Pinal County, Arizona. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 17,054. The city is the county seat of Pinal County. The largest Arizona State Prison complex is located in the city.

Geography

Florence is located at 33°2'32" North, 111°23'4" West (33.042204, -111.384521). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 21.5 km² (8.3 mi²). 21.5 km² (8.3 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 17,054 people, 2,226 households, and 1,540 families residing in the town. The population density is 794.3/km² (2,056.2/mi²). There are 3,216 housing units at an average density of 149.8/km² (387.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 57.12% White, 9.17% Black or African American, 4.42% Native American, 0.83% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 26.79% from other races, and 1.64% from two or more races. 35.42% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 2,226 households out of which 23.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.5% are married couples living together, 12.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.8% are non-families. 26.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.35 and the average family size is 2.80. In the town the population is spread out with 7.6% under the age of 18, 14.8% from 18 to 24, 50.1% from 25 to 44, 18.0% from 45 to 64, and 9.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 482.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 582.5 males. The median income for a household in the town is $36,372, and the median income for a family is $41,959. Males have a median income of $25,545 versus $28,279 for females. The per capita income for the town is $11,278. 7.0% of the population and 6.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 6.1% of those under the age of 18 and 6.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
