Flat Rock, Michigan

Flat Rock is a city located in Wayne County, Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 8,488. Flat Rock is home to the AutoAlliance International manufacturing plant, co-owned by Ford Motor Company and Mazda Motor Corporation. As of 2005 it produces the Mazda Mazda6 and the 2005 Ford Mustang.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 17.6 km² (6.8 mi²). 17.4 km² (6.7 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.47% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 8,488 people, 3,181 households, and 2,306 families residing in the city. The population density is 489.1/km² (1,266.9/mi²). There are 3,291 housing units at an average density of 189.7/km² (491.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 95.32% White, 1.43% African American, 0.49% Native American, 0.47% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.64% from other races, and 1.65% from two or more races. 2.70% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 3,181 households out of which 39.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.7% are married couples living together, 16.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.5% are non-families. 22.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.66 and the average family size is 3.12. In the city the population is spread out with 29.3% under the age of 18, 10.1% from 18 to 24, 30.3% from 25 to 44, 20.8% from 45 to 64, and 9.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 93.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.7 males. The median income for a household in the city is $44,084, and the median income for a family is $54,186. Males have a median income of $43,967 versus $27,348 for females. The per capita income for the city is $21,256. 8.8% of the population and 8.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 11.3% of those under the age of 18 and 4.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
