Fitzroy, Victoria

Fitzroy is a suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. It is in the Local Government Area of the City of Yarra. Its postcode is 3065. Author Peter Temple has set a number of his crime novels in the streets of Fitzroy. Fitzroy is one of the oldest suburbs in Melbourne and is bordered by Victoria St/Parade, Nicholson St, Smith St, and Alexandra Parade. The heart of Fitzroy can be found in Brunswick Street, which is one of Melbourne's major retail, eating, and entertainment strips. The suburb is a hub for live music, and plays host to several prominent venues: the Rob Roy Hotel, Bar Open, the Evelyn Hotel, and the Empress Hotel. The well-known Punters Club was also located in the area; however, it was forced to close in 2002 due to rising rents.
