Fenton, New York

Fenton is a town located in Broome County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 6,909. The Town of Fenton, formerly Port Crane, was formed from the Town of Chenango in 1855. The town includes the communities of Hillcrest and Fenton.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 86.4 km² (33.4 mi²). 85.2 km² (32.9 mi²) of it is land and 1.3 km² (0.5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.47% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 6,909 people, 2,763 households, and 1,947 families residing in the town. The population density is 81.1/km² (210.1/mi²). There are 2,941 housing units at an average density of 34.5/km² (89.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.52% White, 0.87% African American, 0.30% Native American, 0.25% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.19% from other races, and 0.87% from two or more races. 0.80% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 2,763 households out of which 30.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.7% are married couples living together, 8.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.5% are non-families. 24.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.47 and the average family size is 2.93. In the town the population is spread out with 25.1% under the age of 18, 5.9% from 18 to 24, 26.5% from 25 to 44, 26.5% from 45 to 64, and 16.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 96.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.5 males. The median income for a household in the town is $39,622, and the median income for a family is $45,869. Males have a median income of $37,800 versus $25,875 for females. The per capita income for the town is $19,780. 6.8% of the population and 4.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 5.9% of those under the age of 18 and 5.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
