Fayette County is a county located in the state of Tennessee. As of 2000, the population is 28,806. It was named after the Marquis de la Fayette, French hero of the American Revolution. Its county seat is Somerville ⁶.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,829 km² (706 mi²). 1,825 km² (704 mi²) of it is land and 4 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.24% water.

Demographics

As of the census ² of 2000, there are 28,806 people, 10,467 households, and 8,017 families residing in the county. The population density is 16/km² (41/mi²). There are 11,214 housing units at an average density of 6/km² (16/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 62.48% White, 35.95% Black or African American, 0.19% Native American, 0.22% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.39% from other races, and 0.76% from two or more races. 1.03% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 10,467 households out of which 31.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.50% are married couples living together, 14.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 23.40% are non-families. 20.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.71 and the average family size is 3.14. In the county, the population is spread out with 25.70% under the age of 18, 8.20% from 18 to 24, 27.40% from 25 to 44, 25.60% from 45 to 64, and 13.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 96.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.20 males. The median income for a household in the county is $40,279, and the median income for a family is $46,283. Males have a median income of $33,603 versus $24,690 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,969. 14.30% of the population and 10.90% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 18.40% of those under the age of 18 and 18.00% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
