Fayette County, Kentucky

Fayette County is a county located in the state of Kentucky. As of 2000, the population is 260,512. In 1974, its government merged with that of its county seat of Lexington6, creating the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government.

History

One of three original counties formed when Kentucky County, Virginia was divided by Virginia act in 1780. Included area north and east of the Kentucky River, 37 present-day counties and parts of 7 others. It was reduced to its present boundaries in 1799. Named for Marquis de Lafayette, who came to America to assist with the American Revolutionary War.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 739 km² (286 mi²). 737 km² (285 mi²) of it is land and 3 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.35% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 260,512 people, 108,288 households, and 62,915 families residing in the county. The population density is 354/km² (916/mi²). There are 116,167 housing units at an average density of 158/km² (408/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 81.04% White, 13.48% Black or African American, 0.19% Native American, 2.46% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 1.21% from other races, and 1.58% from two or more races. 3.29% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 108,288 households out of which 27.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.50% are married couples living together, 11.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 41.90% are non-families. 31.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.29 and the average family size is 2.90. In the county the population is spread out with 21.30% under the age of 18, 14.60% from 18 to 24, 33.20% from 25 to 44, 20.90% from 45 to 64, and 10.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 96.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.30 males. The median income for a household in the county is $39,813, and the median income for a family is $53,264. Males have a median income of $36,166 versus $26,964 for females. The per capita income for the county is $23,109. 12.90% of the population and 8.20% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 14.30% of those under the age of 18 and 8.60% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
