Fayette, Mississippi

Fayette is a city located in Jefferson County, Mississippi. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 2,242. It is the county seat of Jefferson County.

Geography

Fayette is located at 31°42'40" North, 91°3'44" West (31.711144, -91.062246). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.1 km² (1.2 mi²). 3.1 km² (1.2 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 2,242 people, 775 households, and 543 families residing in the city. The population density is 733.6/km² (1,903.3/mi²). There are 843 housing units at an average density of 275.8/km² (715.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 1.92% White, 97.37% African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.22% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.40% from two or more races. 0.62% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 775 households out of which 39.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 24.4% are married couples living together, 40.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.9% are non-families. 27.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.82 and the average family size is 3.46. In the city the population is spread out with 34.2% under the age of 18, 12.6% from 18 to 24, 25.6% from 25 to 44, 17.2% from 45 to 64, and 10.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 28 years. For every 100 females there are 75.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 69.1 males. The median income for a household in the city is $13,564, and the median income for a family is $16,875. Males have a median income of $20,500 versus $17,011 for females. The per capita income for the city is $8,101. 48.2% of the population and 44.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 58.8% of those under the age of 18 and 38.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
