The
Fatback Band
(later,
Fatback
) were a
1970s
and
'80s
American
funk
band. They began recording in
1973
(see

) with "Street Dance" and "Fatbackin' " (
Perception Records
) and then some singles on
Event Records
. Sales were slim until "Spanish Hustle" (
1976
,
1976 in music
), which was a moderate hit.
1979
's "
King Tim III (Personality Jock)
" is widely considered the first
hip hop
single. In the
1980s
, Fatback had several more hits, including "Take It Any Way You Cant It" and "Spread Love".
