Farmingdale, New York

Farmingdale is a village located in Nassau County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 8,399.

Geography

Farmingdale is located at 40°44'0" North, 73°26'42" West (40.733471, -73.445083). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 2.9 km² (1.1 mi²). 2.9 km² (1.1 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Transportation

Farmingdale is served by the Republic Airport, a major general aviation reliever to the east of New York City, and by the Long Island Railroad.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 8,399 people, 3,216 households, and 2,051 families residing in the village. The population density is 2,869.8/km² (7,432.2/mi²). There are 3,289 housing units at an average density of 1,123.8/km² (2,910.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 87.03% White, 1.61% African American, 0.12% Native American, 3.70% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 5.06% from other races, and 2.43% from two or more races. 12.57% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 3,216 households out of which 28.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.2% are married couples living together, 9.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% are non-families. 29.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.55 and the average family size is 3.19. In the village the population is spread out with 21.2% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 35.2% from 25 to 44, 21.6% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.5 males. The median income for a household in the village is $58,411, and the median income for a family is $68,235. Males have a median income of $46,104 versus $36,021 for females. The per capita income for the village is $27,492. 5.6% of the population and 3.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 3.5% of those under the age of 18 and 13.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
