FAMAS stands for French "Fusil d'Assaut de la Manufacture d'Armes de St-Etienne" (Assault Rifle by St-Etienne Arms Factory). It has a bullpup configuration, weighs 3.6 kg, and uses the 5.56 x 45 mm NATO cartridge. However the F1 version was primarily designed to use French made ammunition, which is of a different power to NATO standard ammunition. It is fully ambidextrous. The G2 version (produced since 1994) is designed to accommodate STANAG magazine as used by the M16, and also has a full length handguard to allow easy use with gloves. Famas G2 is only used by French marine. The Saint tienne arms factory is a member of the French government-owned GIAT Industries complex. The FAMAS is affectionately known as Clairon ("bugle", because of its shape) amongst French troops, and is known to be reliable. An improved version of the FAMAS is to be integrated into the FELIN communication system. Other images See also
