Extreme GhostbustersExtreme Ghostbusters (1997) is a more recent (but short-lived) incarnation/sequel of The Real Ghostbusters cartoon series. Extreme Ghostbusters featured a new team of younger Ghostbusters led by veteran Ghostbuster Egon Spengler and secretary Janine Melnitz. Extreme Ghostbusters appared to be very politically correct when it came to chosing the new Ghostbusters. The new Ghostbusters were Roland Jackson, who replaced Winston Zeddemore as the token African-American Ghostbuster, Garrett Miller, who was wheelchair-bound, Eduardo Rivera, who seemed to be meant as a Latino variation of Peter Venkman, and Kylie Griffin, who was a Goth girl. The theme music for Extreme Ghostbusters took a unique twist on the familar Ray Parker Jr. theme. The new theme was basically a heavy metal inspired variation of the original Ghostbusters theme song. It was widely believed that Extreme Ghostbusters was initially meant to serve as a tie-in for a third live-action Ghostbusters motion picture. Ghostbusters III would've had a similar premise as Extreme Ghostbusters (with Dan Aykroyd's Ray Stanz serving as the new team's mentor/trainer as opposed to Harold Ramis' Egon Spengler like on Extreme Ghostbusters). Aykroyd apparently wanted Chris Farley to play one of the new recruits (and to a lesser extent, Will Smith). But after Farley's untimely death, Aykroyd was never able to replace him in time before Columbia Pictures pulled the plug. With no tie-in available, the Extreme Ghostbusters floundered and was not renewed. If the story about Farley is true then it seem awfully ironic since Dan Aykroyd's close friend and colleague John Belushi was going to be in the original Ghostbusters movie before his untimely death from a drug overdose at the age of 33 (just like Chris Farley). Perhaps the most notable episode of Extreme Ghostbusters was the two part episode entitled Back in the Saddle. In that episode, all of the original Ghostbusters team up with their successors for an adventure. Dave Coulier (voice Peter Venkman), Buster Jones (voice of Winston Zeddemore), and Frank Welker (voice of Ray Stantz) reprised their roles from The Real Ghostbusters.
