Expressways Of SingaporeThe expressway network in Singapore comprises of eight expressways connecting the main urban areas of the main island, with a ninth expressway, the Kallang-Paya Lebar Expressway, currently under construction. With construction commencing in 1966 on the first expressway, the Pan Island Expressway, the long term expressway network plan of the existing master plans has envisaged the Kallang-Paya Lebar Expressway to be the last expressway to be built. However, rising traffic congestion in some sections of the Central Expressway prompted a review in 2004 which may give rise to a tenth expressway to serve the congested north-south sector parallel to the Central Expressway along the Thomson Road corridoor. Largely built by the Public Works Department, the total network length stands at 150 kilometres today. All entrances and exits are by road interchanges, with no traffic lights thoughtout the system. There are no pedestrain walkways alongside these roads, and pedestrains are prohibited from walking along it. In general, bus stops are also not found on this road system except in cases whereby the expressway was upgraded from a normal road, such as along the Jalan Toa Payoh stretch of the Pan Island Expressway, and along some segments of the Ayer Rajah Expressway which was once Ayer Rajah Road and Jalan Ahmad Ibrahim.
