Eurostar ItaliaEurostar Italia is a system of quality trains operated by Trenitalia (Major Italian railway company) on the routes connecting the main Italian cities and towns. Several types of high-speed trains who belong to two major families carry out the service. The first type is the "pendolino" who is an EMU (Electric Multiple Unit) built by FIAT Ferroviaria (now ALSTOM). The first ETR-450 entered service in May 1988 and now variuos version are in service such as ETR-460 and ETR-480. All this trains are capable of speeds up to 250km/h and are provided with tilting systems that allow fast speeds on old tracks route. These pendolinos are blocked composition trains used on medium traffic relations and carry up to 480 passengers. For the main routes Trenitalia use the ETR-500 trains. This train can carry 590+ passengers and is capable of speeds up to 300km/h, although the service is limited to 250km/h because of the characteristics of the railway infrastructure. The ETR-500 is a 11-12 carriage train with double symmetrical traction units. This configuration allows the modification of the composition in function of the service requests. Although the only line on which the trains travel to high speed is FLORENCE - ROME - NAPLES eurostar italia trains are a very appreciate for the travel comfort and the refined design of the interiors. In Italy it is in course the construction of over 600 km of new railway lines that will be usable up to the speed of 250 km/h. These new lines will concur to decongest the existing lines and thus allowing best timetables between the major towns. The lines under constructions are Turin - Milan - Venice and Milan - Bologna - Florence.
