Eudes Iv, Duke Of Burgundy

Eudes IV of Burgundy (1295April 3 1350) was duke of Burgundy between 1315 and 1350. Eudes was the second son of duke Robert II and Agnes, princess of France. Eudes married 1318 Joanna of Artois, princess of France and his own cousin twice removed (eldest daughter of king Philip V), and only one son, Philip of Burgundy survived childhood. Duchess Joan became 1330 heiress to her mother's domains, of which Franche-Comt, county of Burgundy, was adjacent to her husband's Duchy of Burgundy. Eudes was a patron of the arts and the church and sponsored many young artists. He also endeavoured for good political connexions and by marrying a French royal princess assured the good relations with the neighbouring kingdom. The premature death of his son made his four year old grandson his successor. See also: Dukes of Burgundy family tree
