Etterbeek is one of the nineteen municipalities located in the Brussels-Capital Region of Belgium. On January 1st, 2004 the municipality had a total population of 41,342 (19,400 males and 21,942 females). The total area is 3.15 km² which gives a population density of 13,127.36 inhabitants per km². Its postcode is 1040. It neighbours the municipalities of The City of Brussels, Ixelles, Auderghem, Woluwe-Saint-Pierre, Woluwe-Saint-Lambert and Schaerbeek. The main campus of the Dutch-speaking Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) is called Campus Etterbeek, although it is situated on the adjacent territory of Ixelles/Elsene. There is also a rail station called Gare d'Etterbeek but it is located in Ixelles too. Actually, Etterbeek has only one rail station (Mrode) and three metro stations (Mrode, Thieffry and Ptillon). Two catholic churches are located in this municipality (Saint-Antoine church and Notre-Dame-du-Sacr-Coeur) since the third one (Sainte-Gertrude church) was destructed in the nineties as it threatened to collapse. In summer 1996, the municipal swimming-pool burnt and is currently open after being rebuilt. Etterbeek hosts two football clubs (R.R.C. Etterbeek and Armenia) playing in Belgian Provincial leagues at the Guy Thijs stadium named after the famous Belgian manager in summer 2003. He led Belgium national football team to the fourth place of 1986 FIFA World Cup.
