Ernesto Djdj

Ernesto Djdj is an Ivorian musician from Daloa. His parents were Wolof and Bété. Djdj began playing music at fifteen, when he became a guitarist with Ivoiro Star, a leading dopé band, in 1962. He moved to Paris and became a student, continuing to perform, and recording beginning in 1970 with the help of Manu Dibango. During the same period, he returned to his homeland to lead the San Pedro Orchestra, then forming a band called Les Ziglibithiens, playing a style (ziglibithy) based of a kind of Bété roots music. He recorded his first album in 1977, calling it Ziboté with producer Gbadamassi Raïmi. In the early 1980s, he changed bands and producers, and became the king of ziglibithy, before dying in 1983.
