Elmont, New YorkElmont is a hamlet (and census-designated place) located in Nassau County, New York, in the Town of Hempstead. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 32,657. Elmont is famous as the home of Belmont Park Race Track, the world's largest thoroughbred racecourse and the site of the Belmont Stakes. Geography Elmont is located at 40°42'6" North, 73°42'9" West (40.701641, -73.702458). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 8.8 km² (3.4 mi²). 8.8 km² (3.4 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water. Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 32,657 people, 9,902 households, and 7,842 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 3,697.6/km² (9,589.9/mi²). There are 10,151 housing units at an average density of 1,149.4/km² (2,980.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 45.56% White, 34.69% African American, 0.43% Native American, 9.09% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 5.69% from other races, and 4.45% from two or more races. 14.31% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 9,902 households out of which 39.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.9% are married couples living together, 17.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 20.8% are non-families. 17.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.29 and the average family size is 3.68. In the CDP the population is spread out with 26.4% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 30.5% from 25 to 44, 21.8% from 45 to 64, and 12.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 90.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.9 males. The median income for a household in the CDP is $62,511, and the median income for a family is $68,646. Males have a median income of $40,182 versus $35,203 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $22,111. 7.5% of the population and 5.4% of families are below the poverty line.
