Elmhurst, Illinois

Elmhurst is a city located in DuPage County, Illinois. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 42,762. The city is also home to Elmhurst College, a small liberal arts college. The city has the headquarters of Sunshine Biscuits.

Geography

Elmhurst is located at 41°53'32" North, 87°56'38" West (41.892280, -87.943762). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 26.6 km² (10.3 mi²). 26.6 km² (10.3 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 42,762 people, 15,627 households, and 11,235 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,609.2/km² (4,165.9/mi²). There are 16,147 housing units at an average density of 607.6/km² (1,573.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 93.40% White, 0.94% African American, 0.06% Native American, 3.67% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.97% from other races, and 0.95% from two or more races. 4.02% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 15,627 households out of which 33.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.0% are married couples living together, 7.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.1% are non-families. 24.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.63 and the average family size is 3.19. In the city the population is spread out with 25.6% under the age of 18, 7.0% from 18 to 24, 28.5% from 25 to 44, 23.0% from 45 to 64, and 16.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 92.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.4 males. The median income for a household in the city is $69,794, and the median income for a family is $81,496. Males have a median income of $57,193 versus $37,087 for females. The per capita income for the city is $32,015. 2.5% of the population and 1.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 2.6% of those under the age of 18 and 3.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
