Edward Lloyd (Coffeehouse Owner)

Edward Lloyd (d. 1713) ran the Lloyd's coffeehouse in London which became a meeting place for merchants & shipowners. "Chambers Biographical Dictionary", 1990 5th ED. Pub Chambers UK (Edinburgh)gives Edward Lloyd's death as 'd.c.1730' adding that he ran a coffee house in Lombard Street, London from 1688 until 1726. The London society of underwriters came to be known (to this day) as 'Lloyds' from the habit of their members to meet there. Lloyd's coffeehouse spawned Lloyd's of London, Lloyd's Register, and Lloyd's List.
