Eddy County is a county located in the state of New Mexico. As of 2000, the population is 51,658. Its county seat is Carlsbad ⁶. Carlsbad Caverns National Park is located in Eddy County.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 10,872 km² (4,198 mi²). 10,831 km² (4,182 mi²) of it is land and 40 km² (16 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.37% water.

Demographics

As of the census ² of 2000, there are 51,658 people, 19,379 households, and 14,069 families residing in the county. The population density is 5/km² (12/mi²). There are 22,249 housing units at an average density of 2/km² (5/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 76.34% White, 1.56% Black or African American, 1.25% Native American, 0.45% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, 17.67% from other races, and 2.64% from two or more races. 38.76% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 19,379 households out of which 35.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.10% are married couples living together, 11.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.40% are non-families. 24.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.63 and the average family size is 3.12. In the county the population is spread out with 28.90% under the age of 18, 8.40% from 18 to 24, 25.70% from 25 to 44, 22.40% from 45 to 64, and 14.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 95.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.70 males. The median income for a household in the county is $31,998, and the median income for a family is $36,789. Males have a median income of $31,909 versus $19,686 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,823. 17.20% of the population and 13.60% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 21.50% of those under the age of 18 and 13.40% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
