Ebbe SandEbbe Sand (born July 19, 1972, in Hadsund, Denmark) is a Danish professional football striker. He currently plays for FC Schalke 04. Sand first made his name playing for Brndby I.F., although he played for Hadsund BK earlier in his career. After three years of playing only a few games, he got a chance to start in 1995. He scored 12 goals in 30 games and helped Brndby win the Superligaen title. Brndby matched that feat in 1997. 1998 was an even better year for both Sand and Brndby. Sand scored 28 goals in 33 games and helped Brndby win the Danish Cup, completing the double. Sand won the Golden Boot and was named Danish Player of the Year. After one more season in which he scored another 19 goals, Sand was transferred to Schalke for 10 million DEM in 1999. Sand's first season in Germany was successful, as he scored 14 goals, although Schalke only finished 13th in the Bundesliga that year. The 2000-2001 season was much more successful for both the club and Sand. Schalke finished second in the Bundesliga and thus qualified for the UEFA Champions League. They also won the German Cup. As for Sand, he scored 22 goals and tied for lead scorer with Sergej Barbarez. Sand again won the Danish Player of the Year award in 2001. Schalke won the German Cup again in 2002 and finished fifth in the league, with Sand tallying 11 goals. Sand only scored 6 and 8 goals in the next two seasons, respectively. Sand was first capped for the Denmark national football team on April 22, 1998 against Norway. He played for Denmark in the 1998 World Cup and scored only 16 seconds after entering a game as a substitute against Nigeria. Sand played twice for Denmark in the 2000 European Football Championship and three times in the Football World Cup 2002. All told, Sand has been capped 66 times and scored 22 international goals. Following Denmark's run in the 2004 European Football Championship, Sand retired from international football. In August 1998, Sand was diagnosed with testicular cancer. He had the cancer removed and was back in action just a few weeks after the operation. =External links= Sand, Ebbe Sand, Ebbe
