Eastport, Maine

Eastport is a city located in Washington County, Maine. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 1,640. Eastport, Maine is the easternmost city in the United States.

Geography

Eastport is located at 44°54'49" North, 67°0'14" West (44.913741, -67.003914). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 31.2 km² (12.1 mi²). 9.5 km² (3.7 mi²) of it is land and 21.8 km² (8.4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 69.65% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 1,640 people, 750 households, and 444 families residing in the city. The population density is 173.0/km² (447.7/mi²). There are 1,061 housing units at an average density of 111.9/km² (289.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 93.60% White, 0.37% African American, 3.96% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.24% from other races, and 1.65% from two or more races. 0.85% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 750 households out of which 22.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.1% are married couples living together, 12.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 40.7% are non-families. 32.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.14 and the average family size is 2.69. In the city the population is spread out with 18.7% under the age of 18, 7.9% from 18 to 24, 23.5% from 25 to 44, 28.5% from 45 to 64, and 21.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 45 years. For every 100 females there are 89.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.0 males. The median income for a household in the city is $23,488, and the median income for a family is $31,328. Males have a median income of $22,875 versus $17,917 for females. The per capita income for the city is $14,864. 17.2% of the population and 11.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 27.7% of those under the age of 18 and 12.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
