Eastchester is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Westchester County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 18,564. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 8.9 km² (3.5 mi²). 8.7 km² (3.3 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.90% water. Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 18,564 people, 7,687 households, and 5,127 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 2,139.6/km² (5,542.4/mi²). There are 7,919 housing units at an average density of 912.7/km² (2,364.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 90.22% White, 0.94% Black or African American, 0.06% Native American, 6.58% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.94% from other races, and 1.23% from two or more races. 3.56% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 7,687 households out of which 28.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.1% are married couples living together, 8.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.3% are non-families. 30.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.41 and the average family size is 3.04. In the CDP the population is spread out with 22.2% under the age of 18, 4.7% from 18 to 24, 28.8% from 25 to 44, 24.8% from 45 to 64, and 19.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 86.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 82.2 males. The median income for a household in the CDP is $75,117, and the median income for a family is $96,179. Males have a median income of $66,684 versus $49,117 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $42,067. 3.6% of the population and 2.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 3.4% of those under the age of 18 and 4.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line. Richard Sacchi On March 21, 1996, tragedy struck the small town of Eastchester when a resident named Richard Sacchi shot his entire family, including his grandmother, with a submachinegun. When the police camped outside his home in Southern Eastchester, a 12-hour stand-off resulted in the death of Officer Michael Frey. The street parallel to the Eastchester Police Station was renamed Michael Frey Drive in his memory. A Westchester County ad campaign for civil responsibility still uses the phrase: "Thank a police officer in honor of Michael Frey." External links
