East-west CenterThe East-West Center is a federally-funded institution located adjacent to the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa in Honolulu, Hawai'i. Established in 1960 by President of the United States Lyndon B. Johnson and Congress, based on a dream of Governor of Hawai'i John A. Burns, the East-West Center promotes the development of what it calls a "stable, peaceful and prosperous Asia Pacific community in which the United States is a natural, valued and leading partner." Having grown to become a major diplomatic institution of the world, the East-West Center opened an auxiliary in Washington, DC on September 1, 2001. The East-West Center strives to fulfill its mission through programs of cooperative study, training and research. Professionals and students from the United States, Asia and the Pacific study and work together at the East-West Center to better understand issues of common and critical concern and explore mutually beneficial ways of addressing them.
