East 180Th Street (Irt White Plains Road Line Station)East 180th Street is a stop in The Bronx on the 5 Line of the New York Subway. After West Farms Square-East Tremont, the train turns eastward and enters the S-curve to East 180th Street. This station has two island platforms and three tracks. The south end of the platforms has a staff-only bridge allowing access from the two platforms to the yard directly to the west. Current track usage has through trains on the outside tracks. The center track, which can be accessed from either platform, is used for off-hours Dyre Shuttles, short-turns, and special service. Frequently, due to construction, shuttle trains will open doors on both sides of the train, a rarity in New York City Transit. The only other location that this is common is Main Street on the Flushing Line. Until the 1980s, the East 180th Street station had escalators to street level via a mezzanine, which have been removed. A walk under the tracks will show where the original mezzanine was located. Presently, after exiting the fare control you walk east to exit via the old NYW&B stationhouse. A second exit leads to 180th Street. Directly to the east of the platforms are the platforms of the old New York, Westchester & Boston Railroad's 180th Street Station; the trackways of this station are now used for train storage. The platforms there were used for the Dyre Avenue Shuttle when it was first implemented as part of the subway system in 1940. The original NYW&B station house on Dyre Avenue is still in use as the main entrance to the station complex and also provides some office space. The NYW&B station is also home to a police precinct and a small convenience store. To the west of the station is the East 180th Street Yard and Maintenance Shop. The shop complex is currently undergoing major renovation in preparation for servicing the R142 cars when they arrive. To the northeast is the Unionport Yard and a signal tower. Just to the northwest of the station is the flyover connection which forms the soundbound track of the Dyre Avenue branch. A180A180
