Duchess Of CornwallThe Duchess of Cornwall is the courtesy title of the wife of the Duke of Cornwall. Duke of Cornwall is a non-hereditary peerage held by the British Sovereign's eldest son and heir. The Duchess of Cornwall is typically a secondary title of the Princess of Wales, the wife of the heir to the throne. However, since the heir to the throne may in some instances not be the Sovereign's son, and since the Duke of Cornwall is not always the Prince of Wales, this is not always so. The first Duchess of Cornwall was Joan "The Fair Maid of Kent", who in October, 1361 married Edward, the Black Prince. The most recent Duchess of Cornwall was Diana, Princess of Wales, from her marriage in 1981 to Prince Charles, Prince of Wales until her divorce from him in 1996. During this period, she was more usually styled The Princess of Wales. On February 10, 2005 it was announced that Prince Charles will marry his long-term companion, Camilla Parker Bowles on April 8, 2005, and that she will be styled Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cornwall. Exceptionally, she will not use the style Princess of Wales, as she would normally be entitled to do, due to the sensitivities of the public to the Prince's relationship with her, the Prince having admitted to romantic involvement with her when they were both still married -- an involvement which contributed to his divorce from the publicly popular Diana. For the same reasons, upon Charles' accession to the throne, it is intended that Parker Bowles will be styled HRH The Princess Consort, rather than the more usual Queen Camilla.
