Douglas, Wyoming

Douglas is a city located in Converse County, Wyoming. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 5,288. It is the county seat of Converse County.

Geography

Douglas is located at 42°45'22" North, 105°23'4" West (42.756008, -105.384555). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 13.6 km² (5.2 mi²). 13.2 km² (5.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.4 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.67% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 5,288 people, 2,118 households, and 1,423 families residing in the city. The population density is 399.6/km² (1,035.0/mi²). There are 2,385 housing units at an average density of 180.2/km² (466.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 94.12% White, 0.06% African American, 0.78% Native American, 0.13% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 3.63% from other races, and 1.27% from two or more races. 6.64% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 2,118 households out of which 36.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.7% are married couples living together, 10.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.8% are non-families. 28.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.45 and the average family size is 3.04. In the city the population is spread out with 28.5% under the age of 18, 8.0% from 18 to 24, 29.8% from 25 to 44, 21.8% from 45 to 64, and 11.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 94.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.5 males. The median income for a household in the city is $36,944, and the median income for a family is $44,900. Males have a median income of $36,489 versus $18,662 for females. The per capita income for the city is $17,634. 14.1% of the population and 11.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 19.6% of those under the age of 18 and 14.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
