Donets’ka oblast’ (Донецька область in Ukrainian) is an oblast' (province) of eastern Ukraine. Its capital is Donets'k. Historically, the province is a main part of Donbas region. The region's population is the largest in Ukraine, due to the few big industrial cities and numerous laborer villages agglomerated around them (see urbanization). The area of the region is 26,500 km. Its population (as of 2004-05-01) is 4.7 million. A referendum which was to be held on 2005-01-09 to determine whether this oblast shall be granted the status of an autonomous republic inside Ukraine was cancelled after the rerun of the 2004 presidential elections.
