Dickinson, North Dakota

Dickinson is a city located in Stark County, North Dakota. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 16,010. It is the county seat of Stark County. The local paper is the Dickinson Press. Theodore Roosevelt Regional Airport serves the city.

Geography

Dickinson is located at 46°53'1" North, 102°47'20" West (46.883575, -102.788811). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 24.6 km² (9.5 mi²). 24.5 km² (9.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.21% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 16,010 people, 6,517 households, and 4,020 families residing in the city. The population density is 652.7/km² (1,690.7/mi²). There are 7,033 housing units at an average density of 286.7/km² (742.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 97.16% White, 0.27% African American, 1.20% Native American, 0.24% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.32% from other races, and 0.77% from two or more races. 1.05% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. The top 6 ancestry groups in the city are German (54.1%), Norwegian (14.2%), Czech (7.5%), Russian (7.2%), Irish (5.5%), English (3.7%). There are 6,517 households out of which 30.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.7% are married couples living together, 9.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 38.3% are non-families. 32.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.33 and the average family size is 2.99. In the city the population is spread out with 24.5% under the age of 18, 13.8% from 18 to 24, 25.9% from 25 to 44, 19.8% from 45 to 64, and 16.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 93.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.7 males. The median income for a household in the city is $31,542, and the median income for a family is $41,566. Males have a median income of $30,613 versus $19,951 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,975. 12.0% of the population and 7.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 10.2% of those under the age of 18 and 16.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
