Deportivo Saprissa

Deportivo Saprissa is a Costa Rican football club, currently playing in the Primera Divisin. The team is most notable for its policy of only fielding Costa Rican players, and its tremendous on-field success. Saprissas was founded July 16, 1935 by Roberto Beto Fernndez, and entered the Costa Rican Premier Division August 21, 1949. The team has since won 23 national championships, including the 2003-4 championship, and 6 consecutive championships between 1972 and 1977. Additionally, they have won two CONCACAF Championships and several other international awards. The team is owned by Jorge Vergara, also the owner of Mexican club Chivas de Guadalajara and the operator of Major League Soccer club C.D. Chivas USA. Notable players include Alvaro Saboro, Alonso Sols Caldern, Walter Centeno, and Jervis Drummond.
