Democracy For America

Democracy for America is a U.S. political organization formed in 2004. Howard Dean, a former Vermont governor and presidential-nomination candidate, founded the organization, which is now chaired by his brother, Jim Dean. It aims to increase grass-roots participation in the Democratic Party by encouraging members of the public to involve themselves in the political process both as activists and as candidates. Some centrist Democrats consider the tactics of "Democracy for America" to be trotskyist entryism. The organization focuses on:
  • Supporting candidates that are supported by the grassroots for all levels of office by getting their races volunteers, money, and advice in order to build a farm team of progressive candidates.
  • Training grassroots in get out the vote techniques.
  • Keeping Howard Dean in the news and distributing his message.
  • Working with other progressive organizations. Some of this work is facilitated through their participation in America Votes.
All U.S. states have local affiliates of Democracy for America.
