Deke (Hockey)Deke refers to deceiving an opponent in ice hockey by a fake. The deke is a tool a player uses to get past an obstacle, usually another player. The basic deke is performed by crossing the puck with one's stick laterally, from one toe of the opposing player's skate to the other. This is effective during a one-on-one situation where the offenseman is looking to get around the backchecking defenseman. Since the defenseman is skating backwards, he cannot bring his foot forward or draw his stick back to block the laterally moving puck. Once the puck has reached the other side of the defenseman, the offenseman is free to break out, push away the defenseman with a shoulder-on-shoulder check, and reach his goal.
