Decatur, MichiganDecatur is a village located in Van Buren County, Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 1,838. The village is located within Decatur Township. This town is named after war hero Stephen Decatur, Jr. Ventriloquist Edgar Bergen grew up here and a street is named for him. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 3.0 km² (1.1 mi²). 3.0 km² (1.1 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water. Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,838 people, 725 households, and 458 families residing in the village. The population density is 617.1/km² (1,599.1/mi²). There are 792 housing units at an average density of 265.9/km² (689.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 87.65% White, 5.82% African American, 1.41% Native American, 0.27% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.85% from other races, and 2.99% from two or more races. 4.08% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 725 households out of which 33.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.5% are married couples living together, 15.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.7% are non-families. 31.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.49 and the average family size is 3.09. In the village the population is spread out with 28.6% under the age of 18, 8.8% from 18 to 24, 28.9% from 25 to 44, 18.9% from 45 to 64, and 14.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 92.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 83.9 males. The median income for a household in the village is $30,550, and the median income for a family is $36,417. Males have a median income of $27,566 versus $20,703 for females. The per capita income for the village is $14,098. 20.9% of the population and 18.2% of families are below the poverty line.
