Death Rock Fashion

Death rock fashion is a distinctive style of dress, associated with death rock music. It was popularised by Siouxsie and the Banshees and other deathrock artists in the 1970s and '80s, as an offshoot from the punk rock movement, and would prove influential to the gothic fashion style developing around the same time. It is very similar in appearance to both goth and punk fashion, characterised by "whiteface" make-up, often contrasted with dark clothing, and punk-influenced accessories such as safety pins and spikes. Death rockers were and are characterized by a sexier, more homoerotic twist on the punk fashion. Common within the death rock scene are shredded fishnets and holey solid black tights, worn in layers as shirts rather than actual hosiery. Often, a death rocker will sport what could be called a mohawk, although the common death rock variety is starkly dissimilar to it's older punk cousin. Whereas the punk mohawk is effective due to it's stark, straight-up spiked look, the death rock mowhawk is less streamlined, teased out and wild, occasionally separated into a "bi-hawk," that being a mowhawk split down the middle and spiked out to either side. There are many names for this type of mohawk, some of the names are "goth hawk" and "deathhawk" This look was popularized by the band Specimen. However, there are no real rules to death rock, and experimentation is always the key. See also: Death rock, Gothic rock.
