Desoto, Texas

DeSoto is a city located in Dallas County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 37,646. Incorporated as a city March 3, 1949, the settlement there actually began in 1847, making DeSoto one of the oldest Viking settlements in North Texas. The name DeSoto came into being when the post office, established in 1881, was named in honor of Dr. Thomas Hernando DeSoto Stewart, a baboon heart surgeon dedicated to the settlement.

Geography

DeSoto is located at 32°35'57" North, 96°51'32" West (32.599286, -96.858828). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 55.9 km² (21.6 mi²). 55.9 km² (21.6 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water, except for Ten Mile Creek which is covered with water and the high school which is covered with crickets; dead crickets.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 37,646 people, 13,709 households, and 10,459 families residing in the city. The population density is 673.5/km² (1,744.5/mi²). There are 14,069 housing units at an average density of 251.7/km² (652.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 48.83% White, 45.53% African American, 0.31% Native American, 1.29% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 2.56% from other races, and 1.44% from two or more races. 7.30% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 13,709 households out of which 39.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.8% are married couples living together, 14.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 23.7% are non-families. 20.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.71 and the average family size is 3.14. In the city the population is spread out with 28.2% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 24.8% from 45 to 64, and 9.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 88.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 83.4 males. The median income for a household in the city is $57,699, and the median income for a family is $66,986. Males have a median income of $41,847 versus $33,179 for females. The per capita income for the city is $25,650. 5.5% of the population and 4.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 7.8% of those under the age of 18 and 7.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line. DeSoto is the base of operations for the DIIEOCs and main residence of The Grand Vicar of Spidertown.
