Dawson is a town located in Navarro County, Texas, United States. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 852.

Geography

Dawson is located at 31°53'44" North, 96°42'55" West (31.895427, -96.715345). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 4.6 km² (1.8 mi²). 4.6 km² (1.8 mi²) of it is land and 0.56% is water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 852 people, 361 households, and 229 families residing in the town. The population density is 185.9/km² (480.8/mi²). There are 408 housing units at an average density of 89.0/km² (230.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 80.99% White, 15.14% African American, 0.12% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.64% from other races, and 2.00% from two or more races. 6.34% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 361 households out of which 25.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.8% are married couples living together, 13.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.3% are non-families. 34.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 23.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.36 and the average family size is 3.07. In the town the population is spread out with 24.1% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 23.9% from 25 to 44, 21.7% from 45 to 64, and 22.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 90.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 81.2 males. The median income for a household in the town is $25,658, and the median income for a family is $40,441. Males have a median income of $30,250 versus $20,417 for females. The per capita income for the town is $13,190. 20.9% of the population and 13.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 27.8% of those under the age of 18 and 27.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
