Dav Oddsson

Dav Oddsson (born 17 January 1948, in Reykjavk) is an Icelandic politician and the longest serving Prime Minister of Iceland (19912004). He is now the minister of foreign affairs. He graduated from the gymnasium Menntasklinn Reykjavk in 1970 and from the law faculty of the University of Iceland in 1976. He served as mayor of Reykjavk from 1982 to 1991 as head of an Independence Party (Sjlfstisflokkurinn) majority, then became Prime Minister of Iceland as head of four coalition governments. After the elections of 2003, it was agreed that Dav would cede his office in September 2004 to Halldr sgrmsson, the head of the junior coalition partner Progressive Party (Framsknarflokkurinn). Although educated as a lawyer and serving as politician for most of his working life, Dav Oddsson has never laid aside his literary enthusiasm: during his days in office he has authored several plays and short stories, as well as some poetry. Politically, Dav has championed the Icelandic right-wing cause presiding over privatization of multiple government owned corporations. In foreign affairs Dav has been pro-American from the start and a staunch NATO supporter. He supported the American invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq despite general opposition among the population and several protests. He is opposed to Icelandic membership of the European Union.
