Darien, New York

Darien is a town located in Genesee County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 3,061. The Town of Darien was incorporated in 1842 and lies in the southwest part of Genesee County.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 123.3 km² (47.6 mi²). 123.1 km² (47.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.13% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 3,061 people, 1,064 households, and 854 families residing in the town. The population density is 24.9/km² (64.4/mi²). There are 1,125 housing units at an average density of 9.1/km² (23.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 99.12% White, 0.10% African American, 0.29% Native American, 0.03% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.46% from two or more races. 0.23% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 1,064 households out of which 37.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 69.5% are married couples living together, 5.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 19.7% are non-families. 15.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.87 and the average family size is 3.20. In the town the population is spread out with 29.0% under the age of 18, 6.3% from 18 to 24, 30.5% from 25 to 44, 23.3% from 45 to 64, and 10.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 109.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 102.6 males. The median income for a household in the town is $48,844, and the median income for a family is $50,844. Males have a median income of $35,000 versus $23,278 for females. The per capita income for the town is $18,372. 3.2% of the population and 1.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 2.4% of those under the age of 18 and 3.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

  • Darien Lakes State Park -- The park is west of Darien Center on Route 20.
  • Fargo -- A hamlet near the western town line and the state park.
  • Griswold -- A location south of Darien.
  • Lehigh -- A location in the northeast corner of the town.
  • Longwood -- A location on the north town border near the Village of Corfu.
  • Murder Creek - A tributary of the Tonawanda Creek flows through the town.
  • Six Flags, Darien Lake Theme Park, -- North of Darien Center on Route 77.
  • Sawyens -- A hamlet east of the theme park.
