Daniel Bernard

Daniel Bernard is a French diplomat who caused an international controversy with an incendiary remark attributed to him in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 attacks. Having been appointed French ambassador to Great Britain earlier in 2001, Bernard allegedly called Israel a "shitty little country" and blamed it for the ongoing unrest in the Middle East in a conversation he had with Conrad Black of the Daily Telegraph at a private dinner party in December of that year. Bernard's comment was then printed in an article written by Black's wife, Barbara Amiel, in the Daily Telegraph. An immediate firestorm resulted, and it ultimately led to Bernard's being reassigned to become France's ambassador to Algeria in July of 2002.
