Danby, New YorkDanby is a town located in Tompkins County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 3,007. The Town of Danby is located in the south part of the county and is south of the City of Ithaca. Geography The south town line is the border of Tioga County, New York. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 139.2 km² (53.8 mi²). 138.7 km² (53.6 mi²) of it is land and 0.5 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.33% water. Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 3,007 people, 1,187 households, and 830 families residing in the town. The population density is 21.7/km² (56.1/mi²). There are 1,264 housing units at an average density of 9.1/km² (23.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 93.65% White, 2.69% African American, 0.17% Native American, 1.06% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.43% from other races, and 2.00% from two or more races. 1.70% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 1,187 households out of which 33.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.6% are married couples living together, 8.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.0% are non-families. 21.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.53 and the average family size is 2.94. In the town the population is spread out with 24.5% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 30.0% from 25 to 44, 28.9% from 45 to 64, and 9.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 103.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 98.2 males. The median income for a household in the town is $50,348, and the median income for a family is $52,303. Males have a median income of $34,181 versus $30,136 for females. The per capita income for the town is $23,078. 5.1% of the population and 3.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 5.0% of those under the age of 18 and 2.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line. Communities and locations in Danby - Buttermilk Falls State Park -- A part of the state park is located in the town, southwest of Danby village.
