Dalhousie Student Union

The Dalhousie Student Union (DSU) is the official representative body of the students of Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. The membership of the DSU includes all full and part-time students at Dalhousie, each of whom pays a student union fee which funds the union and its services.

History

Student government at Dalhousie likely began in 1863, at the time of Dalhousies reorganization. The first available recorded minutes of a meeting of students at Dalhousie are from 1870. At that time there were ninety-nine students enrolled at the university. The assembly was called the Students Meeting and the Executive only kept order at the meetings. Committees carried out specific duties including exercising financial control, organising the annual Munro Day celebration, holding annual dinners and operating of the Reading Room. In 1966 the provincial legislature passed the DSU's Act of Incorporation, granting the union the status of official organisation of students at Dalhousie University.

Organization

Today the DSU is headed by the Executive, which consists of the President, Vice President (Internal), Vice President (Finance and Operations), Vice President (Education), and Vice President (Student Life). Each executive member (with the exception of the Vice President (Finance and Operations) who is appointed by Council) is elected by the student body in the DSU General Elections, typically held each March. The executive is aided by a number of full-time staff, including a General Manager, Political Research Officer, and Controller. Members of the executive must be members of the union (students at the university) both at the time of their election and during their term in office. The Executive is responsible to the DSU Council. The Council is made up of fourty Councilors including the members of the executive, student Senate and Board of Governors representatives (also elected in the General Elections), representatives from each faculty, representatives from the Black, Aboriginal and LGBTQ constituencies, and representatives from other parts of the University community.

Services

The DSU provides a number of services to students, including health insurance, a copy centre, the Grawood lounge, and the Tiger Patrol.
