Cydoor Cydoor is a spyware program that causes popup and pop-under ads to be displayed while the user is browsing the Internet. It also re-routes web requests through third-party servers for the purpose of capturing web surfing habits. Cydoor consumes about 3.4MB of hard drive space, and cannot be uninstalled using the Windows uninstaller. Typical with spyware, no uninstaller is provided. Cydoor is often bundled with P2P filesharing programs such as KaZaA or eXeem, where it generally goes unnoticed by the average user. Often the agreement to install Cydoor is included in the licensing and terms of service agreement that comes up during installation of the overall software. Since most users skip reading this agreement in full, they end up installing the software without noticing. It used to be that an alert user could uninstall Cydoor and continue to use the program it came with, but that's no longer the case. Now Cydoor is embedded with one or more vital pieces of software code that will cause the parent program to stop working. The website's FAQ explains, "Our components...are the main revenue generating components for our software partners," by way of explaining their supposed necessity. The program has been known to cause problems in Windows, but the company asserts that this is due to an old and buggy version of the software. They also claim not to harvest personal information unless "the user voluntarily supplied it", however in light of the subversive nature of their installation, users are advised to be cautious.
