Croton-on-hudson, New York

Croton-on-Hudson is a village located in Westchester County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 7,606. As a village, it is located in the Town of Cortlandt. It's the site of the New Croton Dam and the 18th century Van Cortlandt Manor, a National Historic Landmark. The village's railroad station, Croton-Harmon, is served by Metro North and Amtrak. Metro North's main shops and yards are located here.

Geography

Croton-on-Hudson is located at 41°12'15" North, 73°53'10" West (41.204228, -73.886177) on the shores of the Hudson River. According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 28.0 km² (10.8 mi²). 12.3 km² (4.8 mi²) of it is land and 15.7 km² (6.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 56.06% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 7,606 people, 2,798 households, and 2,050 families residing in the village. The population density is 618.3/km² (1,601.7/mi²). There are 2,859 housing units at an average density of 232.4/km² (602.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 91.52% White, 1.87% African American, 0.26% Native American, 2.06% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 2.58% from other races, and 1.70% from two or more races. 6.93% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 2,798 households out of which 38.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.5% are married couples living together, 8.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.7% are non-families. 22.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.65 and the average family size is 3.11. In the village the population is spread out with 25.7% under the age of 18, 4.5% from 18 to 24, 30.1% from 25 to 44, 26.1% from 45 to 64, and 13.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 90.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.7 males. The median income for a household in the village is $84,744, and the median income for a family is $100,182. Males have a median income of $65,938 versus $46,029 for females. The per capita income for the village is $39,441. 3.4% of the population and 1.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 3.2% of those under the age of 18 and 1.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
