Crookston, Minnesota

Crookston is a city located in Polk County, Minnesota. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 8,192. It is the county seat of Polk County6.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 12.8 km² (4.9 mi²). 12.8 km² (4.9 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 8,192 people, 3,078 households, and 1,819 families residing in the city. The population density is 640.3/km² (1,658.8/mi²). There are 3,382 housing units at an average density of 264.3/km² (684.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 91.25% White, 0.50% African American, 1.54% Native American, 0.49% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 4.64% from other races, and 1.56% from two or more races. 8.81% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 3,078 households out of which 30.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.5% are married couples living together, 9.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 40.9% are non-families. 34.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.37 and the average family size is 3.10. In the city the population is spread out with 24.2% under the age of 18, 14.9% from 18 to 24, 23.8% from 25 to 44, 19.5% from 45 to 64, and 17.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 93.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.5 males. The median income for a household in the city is $34,609, and the median income for a family is $44,157. Males have a median income of $30,564 versus $21,021 for females. The per capita income for the city is $17,219. 12.5% of the population and 7.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 14.4% of those under the age of 18 and 14.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Crookston is home to the University of Minnesota, Crookston, a campus of the University of Minnesota.

Catholic Diocese

Crookston is also the site of a Roman Catholic diocese.

Bomb Threat

On March 29th, 2005, Crookston High School was released early at 2:45 PM CST, on account of two bomb threats that arose recently. Currently, the person making the threats is unknown at the time, as is also unknown if it is true, or a joke based on the Red Lake, Minnesota shooting. The next day, all but two entrances were blocked, with police searching everyone who came in.
