Cottage City, MarylandCottage City is a town located in Prince George's County, Maryland. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,136. The story that was the basis for the 1971 novel and 1973 movie The Exorcist has its roots in Cottage City.http://www.strangemag.com/exorcistpage1.html In 1999, Cottage City, Bladensburg, and Colmar Manor were lauded by the Joint Center for Sustainable Communities for their collaboration with Prince George's County for the Port Towns Revitalization Initiative, which created a common Port Towns identity for the towns; encouraged businesses development through infrastructure and faade improvements; acquisition of historic properties and plans for their reuse; and reconstruction of the Bladensburg waterfront and marina. Geography Cottage City is located at 38°56'11" North, 76°57'2" West (38.936261, -76.950606). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.6 km² (0.2 mi²). 0.6 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water. Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 1,136 people, 465 households, and 248 families residing in the town. The population density is 1,754.4/km² (4,613.5/mi²). There are 503 housing units at an average density of 776.8/km² (2,042.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 28.61% White, 54.75% African American, 0.88% Native American, 4.05% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 7.57% from other races, and 4.14% from two or more races. 13.29% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 465 households out of which 24.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 32.7% are married couples living together, 17.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 46.5% are non-families. 41.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.44 and the average family size is 3.39. In the town the population is spread out with 23.7% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 28.4% from 25 to 44, 26.8% from 45 to 64, and 13.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.5 males. The median income for a household in the town is $38,594, and the median income for a family is $47,639. Males have a median income of $33,438 versus $34,519 for females. The per capita income for the town is $17,166. 13.5% of the population and 11.0% of families are below the poverty line.
