The
Constituent Assembly of India
was formed to write the
constitution
of
India
, and served as its first
parliament
as an independent nation. It first met on
December 9
1946
, while India was still under
British rule
. On
August 15
1947
, India became an independent nation, and the Constituent Assembly became India's
parliament
. It sat until
January 26
1950
, when the
Constitution of India
took effect. At this point, the Constituent Assembly became the
Provisional Parliament of India
, until the first elections under the new constitution took place in
1952
.
