Connachta
The
Connachta
were a group of
dynasties
who claimed descent from the three eldest sons of
Eochaid Mugmedon
: Brion, Ailill and Fiachrae. They took their collective name from their alleged descent from Conn Cetchathach (
Conn of the Hundred Battles
). Their younger brother,
Niall Noigiallach
was ancestor to the
Ui Nill
. It is from them that the province of
Connacht
in the west of
Ireland
takes its name. The descendants of Brion were known as the
Ui Briuin
, and their off-shoots included the
Ui Briuin Ai
,
Ui Briuin Breifne
,
Ui Briuin Seola
. The descendants of Fiachrae were known as the
Ui Fiachrach
, and their off-shoots included the
Ui Fiachrach Aidhne
,
Ui Fiachrach Muaide
,
Tir nAmalgado
. The descendants of Ailill were known as the
Tir nAilello
, but faded into obscurity.
