Confessor (Sword Of Truth)In the Sword of Truth fantasy fiction series, written by Terry Goodkind, Confessors are a race of people, restricted to the female gender, with the power to destroy a human soul and give them only the desire to serve the Confessor who took them. Anyone taken by a Confessor's power finds delight only in serving the Confessor's desires, to the extreme that if a Confessor asks a person she took to die, they would fall dead that instant (assuming the Confessor was sufficiently powerful). Confessors, alongside a Seeker of Truth, are the remedy to the Wizard's First Rule. If the Truth is important enough to find, a Confessor can use her power to take a soul to find the absolute and total truth, by interrogating one under her power. The only restrictions to this power is that direct touch must be involved between the victim(s) and the Confessor, and this power must be given the chance to regenerate after every use. (Note: only humans can be taken with this power.) While a Confessor's power is regenerating, it cannot be used. The time a Confessor must set aside to regenerate her power differs for every Confessor. The shorter the amount of time required to regenerate, the greater that Confessor's power is. Confessors are only female due to the psychology of the feminine mind. Male Confessors lack the sympathy necessary to consistently exercise the ideals Confessors are required to follow. The lack of strength and empathy in a male Confessor is supposed to visit horror on the world, in the form of tyrants of unbelievable power. The act of sexual intercourse to a Confessor immediately releases her power, and the only immunity to said power is if one has already been subjected to it. The procreation of the Confessor race, therefore, relies on an unwed Confessor of marriageable age taking a male with her power and mating him. All children of a Confessor become a Confessor, so all boys of such a union are killed shortly after birth, usually by the child's father. The tradition of a mate and father taken by a Confessor to kill his own son involves the command of the Confessor he is mated to, ensuring obedience. Then a bar is pressed to the infant boy's throat, and the infant's father stands on the bar until the child's life expires. Because the human soul is destroyed in being subjected to a Confessor's power, marriages in this race do not exist in love, only servitude. The only exception is Kahlan Amnell, who was able to wed Richard Rahl without destroying him, due to extremely exceptional circumstances. This race is led by the Mother Confessor, who, in leading her race leads the whole of the Midlands as well with unquestioned authority. Confessors are distinctive from the rest of the Midlands races because they wear their hair longer than any other social class (denoting status in the Midlands), and wear a distinctive black dress, full of skirt, trimmed with gold, and cut square at the neckline. Nothing else decorates the dress. The Mother Confessor, however, wears a white dress, but it is designed identically otherwise. The seal of the Confessor race is a pair of lightning bolts. The reason for this lies in a Confessor's greatest power, the Power of Con Dar, or Blood Rage.
