Columbus Township, St. Clair County, MichiganColumbus Township is a township located in St. Clair County, Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 4,615. The unincorporated community of Columbus is located within the township. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 96.5 km² (37.2 mi²). 96.1 km² (37.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.4 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.38% water. Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 4,615 people, 1,533 households, and 1,266 families residing in the township. The population density is 48.0/km² (124.4/mi²). There are 1,595 housing units at an average density of 16.6/km² (43.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 97.01% White, 0.09% African American, 0.56% Native American, 0.37% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.69% from other races, and 1.26% from two or more races. 2.30% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 1,533 households out of which 42.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 71.5% are married couples living together, 7.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 17.4% are non-families. 13.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 3.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.00 and the average family size is 3.29. In the township the population is spread out with 30.7% under the age of 18, 7.1% from 18 to 24, 32.1% from 25 to 44, 22.9% from 45 to 64, and 7.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 106.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 105.8 males. The median income for a household in the township is $61,063, and the median income for a family is $65,000. Males have a median income of $46,824 versus $29,931 for females. The per capita income for the township is $21,767. 3.7% of the population and 2.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 4.1% of those under the age of 18 and 2.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
