Columbus, Wisconsin

Columbus is a city located in Wisconsin. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 4,479. Nearly all of the city is located within the Town of Columbus in Columbia County, Wisconsin. A small portion lies the Town of Elba in Dodge County, Wisconsin.

Geography

Columbus is located at 43°20'14" North, 89°1'21" West (43.337366, -89.022753). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 10.4 km² (4.0 mi²). 10.3 km² (4.0 mi²) of it is land and 0.25% is water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 4,479 people, 1,843 households, and 1,194 families residing in the city. The population density is 433.4/km² (1,122.7/mi²). There are 1,927 housing units at an average density of 186.5/km² (483.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 98.28% White, 0.36% Black or African American, 0.22% Native American, 0.31% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.29% from other races, and 0.51% from two or more races. 0.98% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 1,843 households out of which 32.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.0% are married couples living together, 9.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.2% are non-families. 31.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.37 and the average family size is 2.98. In the city the population is spread out with 26.0% under the age of 18, 6.6% from 18 to 24, 29.9% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 91.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.1 males. The median income for a household in the city is $42,667, and the median income for a family is $52,604. Males have a median income of $36,518 versus $22,891 for females. The per capita income for the city is $21,435. 5.4% of the population and 3.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 4.0% of those under the age of 18 and 11.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
